A very popular Dutch sheep, large, black, good mothers and very friendly!

We have been breeding Zwartbles sheep since 1995 when we acquired Una, our foundation ewe, and two others, a male and a female, as day old orphan lambs. We lost one ewe in her first year but Una and Mikey became the foundation of our flock. In fact, most of the ewes that we have today are related in some way to Una and she has produced 25 lambs during her breeding life. We have finally retired her this year as we feel she owes us nothing with that track record!

The ewes are generally good mothers, easy lambing and prolific averaging 2+ lambs per ewe each year. Quads are not all that unusual and Una had two sets; one set when she was seven and another set the following year. Her daughters often have triplets and twins are the 'norm'. The lambs have a fast growth rate but do not run to fat, producing lean lamb for the table in four to five months. When outcrossed with a terminal sire, they produce fast growing, meaty lambs that are ideal for the more commercial market.

We are MV Accredited and our rams are all scrapie genotyped. All our stock is either category 1, 2 or 3, with the older ewes tending to be category 3 and the younger ewes and stock rams being category 1 or 2. We generally have ewe lambs and, occasionally, ram lambs for sale during the late summer either privately or at the breed sales in Worcester and Bridgwater. We sometimes have shearling ewes for sale, too. At present we have two shearling rams for sale, both category 2 i.e. ARR/ARQ. Please contact us for further details.
